Lauren Bloom, MA, MSSW
Registered Associate CSW #79080
I help clients approach serious and stressful situations with creativity and greater emotional and intellectual understanding. I have served people from various socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds as well LGBT individuals, couples, and families. With masters’ degree in both social work and sociology, I understand cultural nuance and systems of power. Over the last 20 years, my clients have been faculty, individuals in the technology field, medical professionals, business owners, academics, people just starting their careers, people who have chosen “alternative” career tracks, parents, and so many other roles. I have done, and continue to do, my own self-examination so that I can be clear and perceptive of others. I am serious and passionate about what I do, while also having a light-hearted spirit.
Specialties (for individual, couples, or families)
Work-related problems and conflicts (for managers or employees)
Parenting and step-parenting
Relationship issues (dating, problems in marriage or significant relationship, and break-ups/ divorces)
Adjustment to life changes including new career, relocation, kids leaving the house, retirement, caregiving, and dealing with health problems

For prospective clients who are more familiar with different approaches to counseling, the modalities I use are based in attachment theory, the neuroscience of emotional regulation and trauma, family systems, CBT, mindfulness practices, and solution-focused therapy. When appropriate, I integrate mindfulness and body-centered approaches from my training as a yoga teacher. In work with couples, I utilize practical aspects of research on couples with attachment theory and how it works in relationships. I’ve been influenced by John Gottman, Sue Johnson, and Stan Tatkin.
Psychotherapy can help you get what you want out of life. Feel free to call me for a free 20-minute phone consultation to see if it feels right. I offer sessions out of my Lakeshore Avenue office in Oakland or online by video conference. Day and evening hours are available.
With over two decades of professional experience in coaching, counseling, and mediation, I use empirically-based therapeutic practices, while also being guided by a strong sense of intuition. I have a master degree in sociology with portfolios in dispute resolution and gender studies as well as a master’s degree in social work. My recent position as an ombudsperson at University of California- Berkeley allowed me to help over 1200 people through complex, multifaceted workplace issues. I have worked in the academic, non-profit, and government sectors. The central theme throughout my professional life has been listening deeply and helping to alleviate suffering by understanding a concern better, finding creative solutions, and making choices.
