Is there something you've always been scared to say out loud, because if you did, nothing would stay the same?
Like in that serenity prayer, do you want to know the difference between what you can change and what you have to accept?
Wisdom's hard to come by in this angry world, and serenity can be fleeting. This is your one shot, so you might as well speak your truth. Let’s figure out what you need and what you already have, so you can stand tall and be exactly who you are. What you believe is your Kryptonite may also be the root of your superpower. I'd even bet on it.
My default position is to believe that it makes perfect sense for you to see things and feel about them the way you do. I hold no particular sense of "normal" to compare you to, and if you're preoccupied with "you vs. normal," I'm apt to notice. I'm also apt to be curious about how you got to be who you are, and to tune in to the voices you carry around in your head, and whether or not they're kind.
The greatest influence on my outlook is Kurt Vonnegut. I believe that the human situation is far too dire not to laugh at, and that it’s so urgent that our only recourse is to be patient. We are animals with enormous brains that make us think we’re in control of things, which means we're bound to run into trouble.
As for myself… every day I really chew on my experiences and thoughts and feelings. I'm an old hand at the puzzlement, adjustment and redefinition, surfing the gray areas between the black-and-white. I did a lot of different kinds of work before becoming a psychotherapist. I've had times being absolutely lost and confused, and I've found my way out of them, pretty much. I'm plain-spoken, easily moved though not easily shocked. I'm a mom; my kids say I'm "Extra AF," but they swear it’s a compliment.
If you're an adult, congratulations. The world needs more of us. You know by now there’s more that needs to be done than you can get to in one lifetime. Let's talk about how you can enjoy the ride a bit more.
If you're an adolescent, I’m sorry about the world we're handing you, and I thank you for bringing some fresh energy to it. Let's think together about how you can survive and even thrive in it.
If you're a couple, well then, both of you are absolutely right, I guarantee it. So let's tackle the question, how can you be together without one of you being wrong?
If you don't quite fit into some common categories--if you're gender fluid, a sexual outsider, neurodiverse, a geek or a freak or “too much”... you get the idea. Call me.
