“The erotic is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings. It is an internal sense of satisfaction to which, once we have experienced it, we know we can aspire.”–Audre Lorde
When I began studying somatic psychology as an undergraduate, it was like learning a new language. As a cognitively oriented person, I am a thinker. Somatic psychology asked me to listen to the subtler voice of my body and an inquiry into my relationship with power and pleasure emerged. As I explored my inner experience, I discovered the root of my power: my erotic life force energy. Through this work I’ve fought familial and cultural conditioning that has systemically severed me from my erotic source. Feeling more deeply into my experience has meant confronting pain, shame, trauma, anger, and oppression. But by connecting to my eroticism I find inner strength and resilience. I am better able to listen to myself, set boundaries, and communicate my needs and desires to others. Every day is an opportunity to honor myself by valuing and staying close to my experience.
MY BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
I immediately fell in love with somatic psychology as an undergraduate, which inspired me to explore my relationship to gender, pleasure, and power. I continued on to complete a master’s degree in counseling at California Institute of Integral Studies with a concentration in somatics. I am currently in the process of becoming a certified sex therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.
I bring openness and curiosity to my therapeutic relationships. I want to understand how you’ve learned to adapt to your environment by honoring the strategies you’ve used to survive. These strategies, like deep grooves, are familiar to us. As we build trust and safety in our relationship, we will practice taking risks by being in touch with your less familiar parts. My job is to help you stay connected with your experience as we invite all of you into the room. Using a blend of techniques from somatic psychotherapy and sex therapy, we will integrate your sensate, emotional, and cognitive experiences in a movement towards wholeness and satisfaction.
Safety: As you explore the depths of your experience, strong feelings or memories may arise. I am here to help you safely navigate this terrain at a pace that's appropriate for you.
Unconditional positive regard: I believe we've all learned to adapt to our complex life circumstances. I am here to understand you from a place of compassion, acceptance, and non-judgment.
Innate capacity for healing: I believe that, under the right circumstances, we all have the innate capacity to heal. I will laugh and cry with you as we walk your healing path. But I cannot tell you how to heal. This process will organically emerge from our work together.
Commitment: Therapy, however long it lasts, is a challenging endeavor. I am committed to being here for you and I ask that you commit to yourself in this relationship.
