Healing from intense inner criticism has been my journey, although it took a long time to realize the source of my pain. My inner persecutor, experienced primarily as a feeling of shame and worthlessness, led me through disembodied states, obsessive thinking, extreme busyness, perfectionism, and many different means of attempting to escape. Eighteen years ago I discovered dance, and it really was the beginning of my healing journey. I still dance every week—for fun, to experience connection with other dancers, to exercise, to feel my power, to play with creativity, fierceness, sexuality, drama, to sweat, to build stamina, to support a more balanced mood, and to move stuck energies. I’ve also incorporated creative movement into my yoga practice. These activities, along with a meditation practice, connect me to my vitality and ground me into my body, allowing me to be present, aware, and resourced for my personal and work relationships.
MY BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
My love of movement and dance led me to pursue a three-year certification in movement-based expressive arts therapy facilitation at the Tamalpa Institute in San Rafael while simultaneously getting my master’s degree in counseling psychology. I worked for one year as a certified rape crisis counselor and have over ten years experience working with individuals struggling with addiction. Before joining Grateful Heart Holistic Therapy Center, I counseled clients in a clinic in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco.
For couples and individual therapy sessions, I offer a warm empathetic presence that invites you to access what is truly in your heart and allow that to be seen and held. In this held space, I will support you to shine the light of awareness on your inner world, including any mental, emotional, or physical places that may be stuck. We may also take a look at relationship or behavior patterns that are no longer serving you. Then I will work with you to help you find new ways of being in the world and in relationship that are more empowering. I may use the arts and somatic movement in session to further facilitate your process.
I like making a real connection with people. I like when I really understand how a client feels and it shows through their energy. It is meaningful to me when my clients practice new behaviors such as asking for something, setting a boundary, or being honest about something they may not have been able to share previously. Safety, compassion, honesty, and humor are principles that inspire and guide me. A feeling of safety is essential for good therapy and is something I can help clients experience and develop. I want my clients to know they can be honest with me and can set limits based on what feels safe for them.
