Do the “shoulds” dictate your every move? Are you a “people pleaser” putting the needs and wants of others before your own? Do you constantly take care of others at the expense of yourself? Do you frequently second guess or doubt yourself? Do you silence your voice?
People who feel an intense need to “live up to” outside expectations, those who frequently find themselves in a “helper” role, or folks that had the experience of being parentified as a child tend to ignore their own needs and wants while trying to meet the expectations of others. Doing this may meet some immediate relational needs and momentarily keep the waters calm in your life but this is often short lived and rarely provides a sense of wholeness, contentment or accomplishment. Ignoring your needs, wants, and values means you are living out of alignment with yourself and this leads to feelings of loss, discontent, anxiety, low self-esteem, disconnection, emptiness, regret, resentment, or grief. If you are tired of “taking the backseat” in life and have a sense that there is a more fulfilling way to live, I can help. Let's find ways for you to live more in alignment with who you truly are so you can experience relief and feel more confident, grounded and fulfilled.
Some of my identities include being a cisgender, heterosexual, white woman. I am both a teacher and student, a mother and a daughter, a spiritual being and a skeptic. I am a sister, a friend, a therapist, a creative. I celebrate, honor, and want to work with clients who don’t necessarily share my identities. I have embarked on a deep exploration both personally and professionally around my own whiteness and privilege and am committed to supporting anti-racist work and dismantling white supremacy.
I work intuitively, drawing from my toolbox the technique that best fits the need of my client in the present moment. I am curious about how each of my clients experience the world and I work holistically, attending to not only their psychological experience, but also their physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences.
My faith in the process of psychotherapy is rooted in my personal experience of participating in my own therapy and undergoing my own ongoing internal transformation. I have developed my own practices in mindfulness and meditation and have integrated them into my daily life.
I have a master of arts degree in integral counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. I counseled individuals at Church Street Integral Counseling Center where I received extensive training in gestalt therapy. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist I was an elementary school teacher for 13+ years, so I have experience working with children, parents, and educators.
My style is rooted in awareness, particularly the body-mind connection. I find that my clients come to therapy wanting a different experience from the one they are currently having, bringing with them a wide range of concerns or issues that they want to work on. My intent is to provide a nonjudgmental and empathic space to support my clients in the courageous act of discovering who they really are. I see myself as both a witness and co-creator of the client’s therapeutic experience, walking with my clients on the path to self-discovery. What this looks like in each session varies, but it may include awareness and mindfulness practices, parts work, talk therapy, somatic-based explorations, imaginary space & metaphor, or experiential experiments. I provide lots of space for my clients to explore their experience while also actively engaging in the process with my clients.
