Master of Arts in Somatic Psychology
In healing relational wounding and establishing greater ease in our bodies we can become better able to form and grow meaningful connections and achieve personal and professional goals. I work with various struggles of mind, thought, behavior, and experiences of self and others. Specialized training in nervous system regulation enables me the ability to aid trauma survivors in uncovering missed experiences and process traumatic happenings. With couples managing trauma, I guide each individual towards gaining a clear understanding of dynamics at play in the relationship(s); I help couples to communicate without feeling triggered so they can understand one another, co-regulate and find ease and fulfillment in their relationship.
I was in a high-pressure career in experiential marketing when I found somatics. I had been recently diagnosed with a chronic neuromuscular disorder, the onset of which was prolonged, oxidative stress. It was confusing at best; 15 years of yogic discipline under my belt, I was a practicing Buddhist, and I'm a NY’er who can handle intensity…stress???
Satchitananda breaks down to: being, consciousness, and bliss. Somatics is rooted in nervous system regulation by way of finding pleasure in one's life and surroundings. Working somatically l came into knowingness of the way my mind muscled through challenges and saw where I was, so to say, missing the magic. My relationship to self, my body, and how I processed life's happenings changed radically. I began experiencing myself different and my capacity grew even greater. Within a few years I came to understand that supporting others in actualizing profound change, is my Dharma.
I bring over a decade of experience in application of movement, mindful awareness, and eastern philosophy to my work as a psychotherapist. Most seek therapy with me to improve resiliency, manage stress, and unravel unwanted, patterned behaviors. My previous career as a producer/designer in tech and entertainment provides for a unique empathic resonance for those navigating high-level positions and high-stress environments. Many find their way to my practice amidst a life-changing shift and come to therapy holding existential questions as well as curiosities about why they do as they do/feel as they feel. I've a knack for holding complexity and asking the right questions to help my clients improve functioning and find ease as a path to thriving.
Trauma theory shows that the body stores and responds to the residuals of unresolved traumatic happenings, even long after the event(s) have occurred. I call upon various evidence-based and trauma-informed, therapy modalities in helping my clients access and process the happenings and memories that lie at the root of their challenges. My lens is trauma-informed and I've specialized training in Somatic Experiencing, Yoga Therapy for Addiction Recovery, Polyvagal Theory, and PACT.
We need to be aware of what’s going on in order to change it. I work with individuals and couples, helping my clients come into deeper understanding of themselves and others and how past experiences can shape or taint the present moment. I help my clients identify patterned and perhaps limiting behaviors to provide relief, and gain or restore a greater sense of agency.
As a holistic practitioner, I keep to a client-centered, whole-systems approach to therapy; I holds all facets of my clients' stories and histories in guiding them towards attaining the shifts they seek in their lives and relationships. Therapy with me is mindful and dialogic and grounded by somatic and psychodynamic inquiry. Together we can explore where we're feeling stuck or sore or unable to feel. In increasing embodied awareness we can gain greater access the mind and that which lies in the unconscious, which is often full of hidden potentials and unrealized wants, needs, and desires that directly serve the goals they come to therapy wanting to see actualized!
No matter the challenge that brings one to therapy, the purpose is to leave better able to be fully present to what is. I support my clients in uncovering and shifting the thoughts, ideas, and circumstances that are blocking them from actualizing their full potential. I believe we all deserve to flourish and prosper, and each has our own way of getting there. The varying ways by which I have been trained and the multiplicity of modalities I call upon create for a unique holding space that is client-centered, integrative, and inclusive.
Our capacity to heal is largely affected by how safe and seen we feel by those close to us. Rooted in dyadic healing and radical acceptance, my practice is inclusive, warm, and compassionate, supporting clients of all backgrounds. I am poly-versed, kink-aware, and LGBTQIAA+ affirming, and work with and welcome relationships of all sorts and configurations.
